TTCS/TTLUG Installfest 2005

When and Where

Date: Sunday 11th September 2005

Time: 1pm to 5pm

Where: Engineering Consultants (ENCO), 112A Edward Street (corner of Oxford and Edward Street), Port of Spain.

The Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (TTCS) will be installing open source software for Windows such as those on the TTCS OSSWIN CD.

The TTLUG will be installing several Linux distros: Fedora Core, Mandriva, Knoppix/Mepis/Morphix Light and for the brave, Gentoo, Slackware and other non-mainstream distros.

Rules for the TTCS portion of the meeting

  • We will only install open source software from the TTCS OSSWIN CD.
  • TTCS OSSWIN CD software will only be installed on machines with the following operating systems: Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP (home and professional).
  • Participants must bring their own keyboards, mice and any other essential hardware required for their machine(s).
  • Monitors will be provided for participants in the TTCS portion of the meeting.
  • You should have a minimum of one gigabyte (1GB) free on the hard drive.
  • TTCS OSSWIN CDs will be on sale for TT$40 per disk.

Rules for the TTLUG portion of the meeting

  • Participants must bring their own monitors, keyboards, mice and any other essential hardware required for their machine(s). This is to enable the Linux installation routine to properly detect and load the appropriate modules for your particular machine.
  • You should have a minimum of five gigabytes (5GB) free on the hard drive.
  • You must defragment your the hard drive(s) before bringing your machine to the meeting.
  • Linux CDs will be on sale for $5 per CD.Or just bring your own blank 700MB CDs and get it for free!

Rules for both portions of the meeting

  • There is a limit of 3 machines per person.
  • CD sales (TTCS OSSWIN CD, Linux distros) are CASH only. No credit.
  • We do not have change for $100 bills.
  • Participants must prepare their machines before the actual day of the meeting. Preparation consists of:
    • Updating your antivirus software and scanning/disinfecting the system.
    • Defragmenting the hard drive(s) where applicable.
    • Backing-up essential data.
    • Ensuring there is sufficient space for the software you wish to install.
  • All computers must be in proper working order. TTCS and TTLUG will NOT be troubleshooting/fixing/updating machines which have problems that are unrelated to the installation of the open source software.
  • Participants will be expected to assist with the installation of the software onto their machines.
  • Participants registered for the Installfest must have their machines on site at ENCO by 3pm for the latest.
  • We will be on a strict schedule therefore we will not be able to accomadate anyone who arrives with their machines after 3pm.
  • Participants must vacate the premises by 4.30pm.
  • There is no official technical support for the software.
  • There is no warranty for the software. The programs may or may not work as expected/described.
  • Both the TTCS and TTLUG reserve the right to not install software on your machine. Even if you arrive on time, even if the software can work on your machine, even if you purchase a full Linux distribution, a TTCS OSSWIN CD or a Knoppix CD.

How to register for TTCS portion of the meeting

If you will be participating in the TTCS portion of the meeting, you need to email ttcs: admin[ at ]ttcsweb.org with the following information:

  • Your name.
  • A telephone contact number.
  • The number of machines you wish to bring to the meeting. (There is a limit of 3 machines per person).
  • The operating system(s) on your machine(s).
  • The name(s) of the applications/software (from the TTCS OSSWIN CD) you wish to have installed on your machine(s).
  • You need to copy and paste the following text into your email:I have read and agree to abide by the rules. I understand and agree that the producers, distributors and installers of the software are NOT liable for any damages or loss whatsoever (including without limitation, special, incidental, consequential, or indirect damages for personal injury, loss of business profits, business interruption, loss of business information, or any other pecuniary loss) arising out of my use of or my inability to use the software. I accept full responsibility for any and all modifications made to my machine(s).Your registration will NOT be processed without this text.

How to register for TTLUG portion of the meeting

If you will be participating in the TTLUG portion of the meeting, you need to email ttlug: [email protected] with the following information:

  • Your name.
  • A telephone contact number.
  • The number of machines you wish to bring to the meeting. (There is a limit of 3 machines per person).
  • The operating system(s) on your machine(s).
  • The name(s) of the Linux distribution(s) you wish to have installed on your machine(s).

I just want to see what’s going on at the Installfest

It is ok for you to turn up at the meeting to be a spectator, however, space is limited so you STILL have to register in advance. Priority will be given to persons who want software to be installed on their machines. The registration process for spectators: you need to email ttcs: admin[ at ]ttcsweb.org with the following information:

  • Your name.
  • A telephone contact number.
  • Tell us how you found out about the Installfest.

There are also rules for spectators:

  • Help only if someone asks you for help
  • Be cautious when helping others. There are many opportunitues for you to screw-up and damage a machine.
  • It is ok for you to purchase TTCS OSSWIN CD and Linux distros (walk with some extra cash).
  • Understand that an installfest is a busy place so the participants may not have time to answer your questions.
  • Do not make a nuisance of yourself.
  • Contribute to the meeting in some way. e.g. bring some snacks or drinks. Email ttcs: admin[ at ]ttcsweb.org and let us know what you plan to contribute.
  • Spectators must vacate the premises by 4.30pm.

I only want to buy some CDs

If you just want to buy some CDs, that’s ok. The procedure is simple:

  • If you want to purchase TTCS OSSWIN CDs, email ttcs: ttcsosswincd [ at ] gmail.com with the following information: your name, a telephone contact number and the quantity you want.
  • Email ttlug: [email protected] for further info on available distros. If you want to purchase Linux distros email ttlug with the following information: your name, a telephone contact number and the name and quantity of each distro.

You can collect your CDs on the day of the meeting during the time of the actual meeting (1pm to 5pm). Note that we cannot sell CDs after 5pm and all payments are cash only. No credit.

Support

There is no official technical support for any software provided at the Installfest.

Should you require support or assistance for the software, check the program’s official web site (if available). The site would usually provide workarounds/patches for known bugs, upgrades, new versions, a list of freqently asked questions (FAQ) and message boards where you can contact other users for help with your problem.

The program’s official web site is usually listed in the “readme” file, the help file or users’s manual which accompanies the software.

If there is no official site, you can use an Internet search engine (e.g. www.google.com) to locate help for your problem.
