  • Trinidad & Tobago Government considering $45 US computer for all students?

According to a article In a Saturday December 17 2011 Trinidad Express newspaper article "Kamla considers laptop for every pupil"

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar said there is a $45 US computer and has asked educators to determine whether such computer would be suitable for the nation's schools.
"That means I can give every child, not just every form one a laptop. I'm not making that a promise, it depends if the computer has the capacity in the way that we want it to work for our schools," she said.

The $45 US computer is likely to be the "Aakash" or Sky tablet launched by the India Government and the Datawind company in October 2011.

Here's a video from Al Jazeera's Prerna Suri on the launch of the Aakash tablet:

According to Datawind's press release, the Aakash is a 7" resistive touch screen tablet at 800×400 resolution running Android OS v2.2 ("Froyo") with a 366Mhz CPU, 256 RAM, 2GB internal storage, expandable to 32GB via a microSD slot, 2 USB ports, 3.5mm audio in and audio out jacks, and includes WiFi (802.11 a/b/g) connectivity.

However, the commercial variant of the Aakash tablet called the Ubislate 7 is expected to be available in early 2012. There are reports that this features several upgrades such as a faster CPU, Android v2.3 and built-in GPRS connectivity.
