    If you have been casually observing international headlines in the last few months, you have probably heard the term ‘bitcoin’ or ‘virtual-currency’.

    Do you understand what that is and how it can affect you?

    The Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (TTCS) invites anyone who wants to learn more about ‘bitcoin’ and ‘virtual-currencies’ to join us for our Tech Meeting on Saturday 14th June 2014
    at UWI Open Campus, Gordon Street, St. Augustine from 3pm to 5pm.

    Topics to be discussed include:

    • Decentralized currencies in Trinidad and Tobago: Rationale and Outlook – Presented by Richard Jobity
    • Digital Currencies: Challenge or Solution – Presented by Shiva Bissessar

    About our presenters:

    Richard Jobity is an economist with more than 20 years experience, including 11 years at a major financial institution. His current interests include technology and competitive intelligence in developing countries.

    Shiva Bisessar, an ICT practitioner, currently runs a small consultancy firm specialising in provision of technical advisory on clients’ efforts in developing ICT and Information Security policies, regulations and governance strategies.

    This event is open to everyone and we look forward to your questions and feedback.

    You come into Chaguanas from the highway , get on the main road (the road that runs under the flyover on the highway) , head west past the Courts store and Marios and the car place, and turn left by the Kiss shop on the first corner you come to.  As you turn, you will be heading south.  Pass two corners on your right (one on the left) and the Papa John’s should be on your right hand side, opposite Mid-Centre mall.

  • Summary of TTCS meetings in 2013

    We hold two types of meetings : Pizza Limes and Tech Meetings. A Pizza Lime is the name given to our monthly discussion forum which is usually held at Joe’s Pizza, St. Augustine on the second Wednesday of the month. The tech meeting is when we have computers on site to demonstrate a particular type of hardware or software.

    At this meeting at ENCO, Mr. Kevin Suares, a Systems Administrator at Central Connecticut State University in the United States discussed his experiences in dealing with two alleged data breaches at the University from technical, procedural and policy viewpoints.

    Held in collaboration with the University of the West Indies, St Augustine (UWI) Faculty of Engineering from 2-4pm, Anil Ramnanan demonstrated the Raspberry Pi , a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard.

    At this meeting, Tracy Hackshaw demonstrated the Google Chromecast, billed as the easiest way to enjoy online video and music on your TV and the Google Chromebook Pixel , Google’s high-end laptop running Chrome OS.

    Saturday October 26 2013 – flying Quadricopter demo

    Held at the Queen’s Park Savannah, we (thanks to Anil) demoed the Parrot AR 2.0, a wi-fi enabled, Linux-powered flying Quadricopter and flew the Quadricopter using a phone and tablet.

    Saturday December 14 2013 – discussion about Free and Open Source

    Held at the Asian Buffet Restaurant, Trincity Mall,  we chatted Ace Suares, a Free and Open Source Advocate from Curaçao and who was travelling en route from giving workshops on open source at the University of Georgetown. We had the XO laptop and XO Tablet on hand.

    The Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (TTCS) will be having a lime on Saturday December 14, 2013 from 4pm to 6pm at the Asian Buffet Restaurant, Trincity Mall.

  • TTCS Savannah lime on Saturday October 26 2013 from 1pm at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain : flying Quadricopter demo

    The Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (TTCS) will be having a meeting on Saturday 26th October, 2013 at 1pm at the Queens Park Savannah, Port of Spain, opposite NAPA.

    At this meeting, we will be demonstrating the Parrot AR 2.0, a wi-fi enabled, Linux-powered flying Quadricopter. We’ll see how to fly the Quadricopter using a phone and tablet. The Quadricopter is built on open source and has an open API so we’ll be showing you how we can use Javascript and Node.js to write your own code for autonomous flight.

    If you want to learn a little code and see some stuff fly, join us at 1pm. We will be parking on the paved area opposite NAPA.

    If the weather lets us down, we will move the lime to Vie de France, Maraval (no flying will be done inside the restaurant, though, just good company and lots of tech-talk).
