OpenOffice.org v2.3.1 has been released. With a new version of Mozilla Firefox v2.0.11 released just last week, look for version 1.83 of the TTCS OSSWIN CD in time for the weekend.

TTCS submission for Software Freedom Day 2007 receives “highly commended” award
The Software Freedom Day (SFD) Competition 2007 results have been announced by the Software Freedom Day organisation and the Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society’s entry for SFD 2007 received a “highly commended” award from the Software Freedom Day organisation!

Tux Paint v0.9.18 released
Tux Paint v0.9.18, the fun open source drawing program for kids is available from New Breed Software for Windows 2000/XP/Vista and PowerPC based Macs (versions for older Windows 98/Me, Intel based Macs will be available soon).
A key feature of the new release is the ability to write and add your own “Magic Tools” plugins. Read the Tux Paint press release for more details.

Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.9 to be available soon
Was thinking of pushing out a TTCS OSSWIN CD v1.82 release in time for the weekend, but just saw the Mozilla Firefox Developer News talking of Mozilla Firefox v2.0.0.9 coming out very soon. Release Candidate builds of Mozilla Firefox v2.0.0.9 are available for testing.
As such, TTCS OSSWIN CD v1.82 will be published soon after Mozilla Firefox v2.0.0.9 is released, hopefully early next week.

Gimp 2.4 available
Gimp 2.4, the image editor suitable for photo retouching (its features are often compared with Photoshop) for Windows 2000/XP/Vista (support for Windows 98 has been dropped) is available for download. You can read a summary of what new in this release from the Gimp documentation.
Gimp v2.4 will be included in version 1.82 of TTCS OSSWIN CD ; the Gimp Help files for v2.2 on the TTCS OSSWIN CD will be dropped to make room for Gimp 2.4.

TTCS Software Freedom Day 2007 video
At the recent Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (TTCS) Software Freedom Day event on September 15th, 2007, Mike Tikasingh recorded some video footage with a camcorder. Thanks to Mike’s hours of editing, we have a 18 minute video of the TTCS Software Freedom Day 2007 event which also features the TTCS new logo!
The video is available in three formats :
- ttcs_sfd2007.ogg, a 75MB OGG file.
- ttcs_sfd2007.avi, a 40MB XviD file.
- TTCS_SFD2007.mp4, a 105MB MP4 file.

TTCS meeting on Saturday 29th September 2007 from 1pm to 4pm
The Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (TTCS) will be having a meeting on Saturday 29th September 2007 from 1pm to 4pm at Engineering Consultants, at 112A Edward Street, Port of Spain. (located at the corner of Oxford and Edward Street).This meeting will be an opportunity for those unable to attend the TTCS Software Freedom Day event on September 15th, 2007 as we will be repeating some of the presentations made on Software Freedom Day .
We will be :
– giving an overview of what is free and open source software
– demonstrating Ubuntu, a popular Linux-based operating system bundled with many applications.
– demonstrating the TTCS OSSWIN CD, a CD of over 100 free and open source programs for WindowsAttendees can get a TTCS OSSWIN CD and a Ubuntu CD for $20 TT ; schools and other educational institutions can get these free of charge, provided an email is sent before Saturday).
Anyone who uses a computer is welcome to attend. Attendance is free.

Meeting on Sept 8th, 2007 went well and the TTCS will be having a meeting on Sunday 9th, 2007 at ENCO from 10am to continue preparatory work for Software Freedom Day on September 15th, 2007.
