    The Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (TTCS) will be having a meeting on Saturday September 11 2010 from 1pm to 5pm at Engineering Consultants at 112A Edward Street, Port of Spain (corner of Oxford and Edward Street).

    At this meeting, we will be doing preparations for Software Freedom Day (SFD) 2010 which will be on September 18th 2010.

    What is SFD?

    Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a global, grassroots effort to educate the public about the benefits and availability of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). The non-profit company Software Freedom International (http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/) coordinates SFD at a global
    level. Volunteer teams throughout the world organise local SFD events around the third Saturday in September.

    What TTCS is doing for SFD 2010

    For SFD 2010, we will have a booth at Trincity mall, Trincity on
    September 18 2010 from 10am to 5pm to demonstrate various aspects of Free and Open Source Software such as :
    – our TTCS OSSWIN disc (https://www.ttcs.tt/osswin-cd/)
    – demoing Ubuntu, a popular linux-based operating system bundled with many applications.
    – our system to track/monitor disasters in Trinidad & Tobago

    This is similar to our booth displays held for SFD2009 at Gulf City
    Mall, Lowlands, Tobago and at Long Circular Mall, Trinidad (videos from this effort can be seen at http://www.vimeo.com/ttcs).

    What will TTCS be doing this Saturday September 11

    Some of the preparations for SFD 2010 that will be done on Saturday September 11 :

    – confirming who will be assisting TTCS on the day itself.
    – designing press releases
    – preparing 2-3 machines for SFD 2010 – installing Microsoft Windows 7 and installing Ubuntu
    – preparing the TTCS OSSWIN disc to add more applications ; we will be burning DVDs instead of CDs so more applications can be included. Help is needed to write descriptions, screenshots, etc.

    Also, if time permits, further discussion on our larger event to be
    held in November 2010 ; a tech day event covering various aspects of computing including Windows, MacOS, Linux and the Internet.

    If you are willing to help TTCS with SFD on Sept 18, do email admin a@t ttcsweb.org and try to attend this Saturday.

    The Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (TTCS) will be having a meeting on Wednesday September 8 2010 from 7 to 9 pm at Pizza Hut, Valsayn.

    Come join us as we eat and chat about various computing related topics including :

    – the purchase of Laptop computers for SEA students 
    – planning for Software Freedom Day on September 18th 2010.
    – planning for a TTCS November 2010 Tech Day event. 

    Contribution of $30 towards food bill is expected. Anyone interested are welcome to attend.  See you there!

    After the first meeting by the Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (TTCS) on Friday 20 August 2010 to discuss the concept of designing a website using maps of Trinidad and Tobago to track and monitor disasters such as flooding and to alert persons accordingly, it was agreed that the TTCS will attempt the project.

    The TTCS will have a meeting on Wednesday 25 August 2010 from 6pm to 8:30pm at Engineering Consultants (ENCO) at 112A Edward Street, Port of Spain (corner of Oxford and Edward Streets) to continue work on this project.

    TTCS invited to Focus Group Discussion on #Trinidad & #Tobago ICT Strategy “Fastforward II” on August 7 2010

    (Update 3 August 2010 : The Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (TTCS ; http://ttcsweb.org/) will be having a pizzalime on Thursday August 5 2010 from 6pm to 9pm at Pizza Hut, Roxy Roundabout to discuss the upcoming Focus Group Discussion with the Ministry of Public Administration on Trinidad & Tobago ICT Strategy “Fastforward II”. Anyone interested are welcome to attend. A contribution of $30 TT towards the food bill is expected.)

    The Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (TTCS ; http://ttcsweb.org/) has been invited by the Ministry Of Public Administration of Trinidad and Tobago (http://www.mpa.gov.tt/) to a focus group discussion on August 7 2010 regarding Fastforward II, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago’s National Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Strategy. 

     

    From the letter of invitation : 

    The Ministry of Public Administration, in collaboration with the National ICT Company Limited (iGovTT) and the Infocomm Development Authority International (IDA-i) of Singapore, has embarked upon a ICT
    master planning exercise towards the drafting of the second iteration of fastforward. Whereas fastforward I (2003-2008) focused primarily on “Connectivity” and sought to bridge the digital divide by increasing
    the accessibility and affordability of ICTs to all citizens irrespective of economic status and location. Fastforward II will concentrate more on ICT “usage and uptake” in order to give direction to Trinidad and Tobago’s digital development for the period 2010 to 2014…..

    ….Discussions will surround key initiatives being proposed under fastforward II including, but not limited to :

    1. Building an e-Ready Generation through ICT Enriched Learning
    2. Creating and Promoting Local Digital Content
    3. Providing Accessible and Affordable ICT Services for Digital Inclusion
    4. Promoting Media Literacy and Online Protection.

    Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Windows Server 2008 SP2 released

    Microsoft has releases Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 for download.

    Download :

    The 32 bit versions of Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 are combined in one standalone installer. Likewise for the 64 bit versions of Vista SP2 and Server 2008 SP2.

    Adobe releases security updates to Adobe Acrobat Reader & Acrobat for Windows, Mac and Linux

    On May 12th, 2009, Adobe has released security updates to Adobe Acrobat Reader and Acrobat for Windows, Mac, and Linux. From the security bulletin at http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb09-06.html :

    “A critical vulnerability has been identified in Adobe Reader 9.1 and Acrobat 9.1 and earlier versions. This vulnerability (CVE-2009-1492) would cause the application to crash and could potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. A second vulnerability has also been reported that appears to affect Adobe Reader for UNIX only (CVE-2009-1493).

    Adobe recommends users of Adobe Reader 9.1 and Acrobat 9.1 and earlier versions update to Adobe Reader 9.1.1 and Acrobat 9.1.1. Adobe recommends users of Acrobat 8 update to Acrobat 8.1.5, and users of Acrobat 7 update to Acrobat 7.1.2. For Adobe Reader users who can’t update to Adobe Reader 9.1.1, Adobe has provided the Adobe Reader 8.1.5 and Adobe Reader 7.1.2 updates.”
